An ATS-friendly resume template is single-column and plain-text, with standard section headings and no tables, text boxes, columns, icons, or graphics — and the file saved as a text-selectable PDF. The templates below are built to that standard, parser-tested, and free to download. Pick one by your role, download it, and run it through an ATS checker before you apply — a good template only stays ATS-safe if you keep it that way while editing.

Which template should you use? (quick-pick by role)
Match the template to your role — the structure that parses and ranks best differs by job.
Role | Recommended template | Why |
|---|
SDE / software engineer | Single-column, projects-prominent | Parses cleanly; projects rank for freshers |
Data scientist / ML | Single-column with a skills block | Surfaces tools (Python, SQL, TensorFlow) |
Product manager | Single-column, impact-led | Quantified outcomes parse and rank |
Fresher / first job | One-page, education-first | India convention for no-experience CVs |
Senior / 5+ yrs | Two-page, experience-first | Depth without breaking the parser |

What makes a resume template ATS-friendly?
An ATS-friendly template is one a parser can read top to bottom without losing or scrambling content. The checklist:
Single-column layout — no side columns.
Standard section headings (Experience, Education, Skills).
No tables, text boxes, images, icons, or logos.
Contact details in the body, never in the header or footer.
Standard fonts (Arial, Calibri, Georgia) at 10–12pt.
Saved as a text-selectable PDF or .docx — never an image or scanned PDF.
Single-column vs two-column templates — which to use
Single-column is the ATS-safe default. Two-column templates risk the parser reading your columns out of order and scrambling your experience.
| Single-column | Two-column |
|---|
ATS-safe? | Yes — recommended | Risky — parsers may scramble order |
Best for | Everyone, especially freshers | Designers showing layout (test first) |
Templates by experience level
The same single-column base, with emphasis shifting by stage: freshers use a one-page, education-and-projects-first layout; mid-level candidates lead with work experience; senior candidates use a two-page, experience-first template with a summary up top and education at the bottom. Whatever the level, keep it single-column and parser-clean.
Resume templates for India — what's different
India has its own conventions, and global template sites can't be the India answer. On an Indian resume, "CV" and "resume" mean the same one-to-two-page document; two pages are acceptable once you have real experience, freshers stay on one; the page size is A4, not US Letter; and you should leave out the photo, date of birth, and "Declaration" line that older Indian templates include. The ATS rules underneath are identical — single-column, standard headings, text-selectable PDF. For Naukri and Indian-company specifics, see how Indian companies use ATS.
How to download and use your template
Download the template, replace the placeholder text with your own, and keep the structure intact — don't add columns, tables, or graphics while editing, or you'll break the very thing that makes it ATS-safe. Save the final file in the right format:
Format | Use when |
|---|
Text-selectable PDF | Default — preserves layout, parses in modern ATS |
.docx | The application portal specifically asks for Word |
Image / scanned PDF | Never — the ATS can't read it |

Test your template before you apply
A template is ATS-friendly only if it's still ATS-friendly after you fill it in. Before you submit, run your completed resume through a checker — it parses the file the way a real ATS would and shows you whether every section was captured.

Frequently asked questions
What makes a resume template ATS-friendly?
A single-column layout with standard section headings, standard fonts, and no tables, text boxes, graphics, or columns. Contact details sit in the body, not the header, and the file is saved as a text-selectable PDF or .docx so the parser can read every line.
Reverse-chronological, single-column. It lists your most recent experience first in a structure every ATS parses reliably. Functional and heavily designed two-column formats are the ones that break.
Are free resume templates ATS-friendly?
Some are, many are not. Free templates loaded with columns, icons, and graphics look good but break parsers. Use a template that has been tested against an ATS — or test it before you rely on it.
Is Canva ATS-friendly?
Most Canva resume templates are not. They commonly use columns, text boxes, and graphics that ATS parsers struggle with. If you build in Canva, export it and check the ATS score before applying.
Should a resume be one page or two?
Freshers should aim for one page. In India, two pages is acceptable once you have relevant projects, internships, or a few years of experience — but only if every line earns its place. Don't pad to fill a second page.
What page size should a resume be — A4 or A3?
A4 in India (US Letter in the United States). Never A3 — it is far too large and no ATS or recruiter expects it.
Single-column or two-column template?
Single-column is the ATS-safe default. Two-column templates risk the parser reading your columns out of order and scrambling your experience. If you want two columns, test the file in an ATS checker first.
A text-selectable PDF for most modern ATS, because it preserves your layout. Use .docx only when the application portal specifically asks for Word. Avoid image-based or scanned PDFs entirely.
What's the best resume template for freshers?
A one-page, single-column template that puts education and projects near the top, since freshers are judged mainly on those. See resume format for freshers in India for the full layout.
Can I use Microsoft Word's built-in templates?
Many of Word's built-in templates use tables and columns that parse poorly. A verified single-column ATS template is safer — and whichever you choose, test it before applying.
How do I know if my template is ATS-friendly?
Run a filled-in copy through an ATS checker. If it parses cleanly into the right fields and captures all your information, the template is ATS-friendly. Check yours free on ResumeLens.
