An ATS-friendly template is one a parser can read top to bottom without losing or scrambling content. The checklist:
Single-column layout — no side columns.
Standard section headings (Experience, Education, Skills).
No tables, text boxes, images, icons, or logos.
Contact details in the body, never in the header or footer.
Standard fonts (Arial, Calibri, Georgia) at 10–12pt.
Saved as a text-selectable PDF or .docx — never an image or scanned PDF.
Single-column is the ATS-safe default. Two-column templates risk the parser reading your columns out of order and scrambling your experience.

The same single-column base, with emphasis shifting by stage: freshers use a one-page, education-and-projects-first layout; mid-level candidates lead with work experience; senior candidates use a two-page, experience-first template with a summary up top and education at the bottom. Whatever the level, keep it single-column and parser-clean.
India has its own conventions, and global template sites can't be the India answer. On an Indian resume, "CV" and "resume" mean the same one-to-two-page document; two pages are acceptable once you have real experience, freshers stay on one; the page size is A4, not US Letter; and you should leave out the photo, date of birth, and "Declaration" line that older Indian templates include. Download the template, replace the placeholder text with your own, and keep the structure intact — don't add columns, tables, or graphics while editing, or you'll break the very thing that makes it ATS-safe. Save the final file in the right format:

Reverse-chronological, single-column. It lists your most recent experience first in a structure every ATS parses reliably. Functional and heavily designed two-column formats are the ones that break.
Some are, many are not. Free templates loaded with columns, icons, and graphics look good but break parsers. Use a template that has been tested against an ATS — or test it before you rely on it.
Most Canva resume templates are not. They commonly use columns, text boxes, and graphics that ATS parsers struggle with. If you build in Canva, export it and check the ATS score before applying.
Freshers should aim for one page. In India, two pages is acceptable once you have relevant projects, internships, or a few years of experience — but only if every line earns its place. Don't pad to fill a second page.
A4 in India (US Letter in the United States). Never A3 — it is far too large and no ATS or recruiter expects it.
